Joe Biden Battles Aggressive Prostate Cancer as Nation Sends Support

Joe Biden, the former President of the United States, has been diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer, according to an official statement from his personal office. The cancer, which has spread to his bones, was discovered following additional medical tests performed last week after identifying a prostate nodule. At 82 years old, Biden’s diagnosis has drawn national and international attention and concern.
Doctors assigned the illness a Gleason score of 9, indicating a highly aggressive and advanced form of prostate cancer. Despite the severity, medical professionals stated that the cancer is hormone-sensitive, which can make it more manageable through hormone-based therapies. Biden and his family are currently considering several treatment options in light of the diagnosis.
Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among American men and is the most diagnosed cancer after non-melanoma skin cancer. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention emphasizes that early detection significantly improves survival rates. Biden’s case highlights the importance of regular checkups, particularly for aging men at higher risk for the disease.
Having concluded his presidency in January, Biden opted not to pursue reelection in the 2024 race due to increasing scrutiny about his age and health. Instead, he endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to carry forward his political legacy. Biden had been a strong advocate for cancer research, especially after losing his son Beau to brain cancer in 2015.
During his vice presidency, Biden led the Cancer Moonshot initiative under President Barack Obama, aiming to accelerate cancer research and improve treatments. After becoming president, he revived the initiative with the goal of cutting the cancer death rate in half over 25 years. His personal battle now brings additional attention to that mission.
Expressions of support have poured in from political allies and opponents alike. Former President Donald Trump issued a message on Truth Social, stating that he and Melania were saddened by Biden’s condition and extended best wishes for a successful recovery. The uncharacteristically warm message was a moment of rare unity across party lines.
Vice President Kamala Harris also shared words of encouragement on social media, expressing her confidence in Biden’s strength and resilience. She said she and her husband, Doug Emhoff, were keeping the Biden family in their prayers. Harris’s message reflected the respect and personal connection she has developed with Biden over the years of working together.
